Based on a report released by energy and climate think-tank Ember, Türkiye's roof solar potential could offset 45% of electricity demand. Despite Turkey's huge solar potential, solar power still only makes up 4.86% of the country's energy generation as of 2022, with gas and coal making up over 70%. While Türkiye is seriously lagging on its solar goals, its rooftop solar potential is 10 times its current installed capacity, meaning progress can still be made.
According to the Turkish National Energy Plan announced in 2022, Türkiye also plans to increase its installed solar power capacity to 52.9 gigawatts by 2035.
The research shows that Turkey has the potential of 189 GWh/ year in electricity production obtained from solar energy. In terms of production potential, this value puts Turkey ahead of Spain, France, and most of the European countries. Turkey, which has a significant potential in terms of solar energy, faces some difficulties in. exploiting this energy. The biggest challenges faced are technology and financial constraints. In addition, the need for a qualified workforce is quite high. Government incentives for encouraging indigenous production and encouraging investors are very important in this regard.
