• The Celts were the original inhabitants of England.
• However, around 449 A.D., groups of barbaric invaders (the Saxons,
Angles and Jutes) started pouring into the south and east of England.
• The Celts were not as good fighters as those invading groups.
• The Celts were obliged to accept humiliation, loss and defeat.
• The Celts withdrew into Wales in the west and the Scottish highland
in the north.

• The Saxons, Angles and Jutes were from the north-western part of
Europe, i.e., from those parts of Europe which are known now as
Sweden, Denmark, and northern Germany.
• The Saxons, Angles and Jutes saw England as a good land to settle in,
a land where a nation could be built. So they dispossessed the Celts
of their land, their women, their cattle and the like and settled there
forever.
• By 450 A.D., the Saxons, Angles and Jutes firmly established
themselves in the southern and eastern parts of England.

• The Saxons, Angles and Jutes tribes had one thing in common that
was their language.
• With the passage of time, the Angles predominated the other two
tribes.
• It was probably because of their predominance that the language of
all the three tribes was known as Englisc (English)

• Since about 1000 A.D., the country came to be known as Englalond
(land of the Angles).
• England, the present name of the country, was a later version of this
early name.
